How this calculator works
This calculator works out the tip and the total to pay for any bill and tip percentage. Use it at restaurants, for delivery, taxis, hairdressers or any service where tipping is expected.
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal to get the tip, then add it to the bill for the total.
Worked example: an 18% tip on a $64 bill
- Turn the tip into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18.
- Work out the tip: 64 × 0.18 = 11.52.
- Add it to the bill: 64 + 11.52 = 75.52.
Tip $11.52, total $75.52.
Quick reference: tips on a $50 bill
| Tip | Tip amount | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | $5.00 | $55.00 |
| 15% | $7.50 | $57.50 |
| 18% | $9.00 | $59.00 |
| 20% | $10.00 | $60.00 |
| 22% | $11.00 | $61.00 |
| 25% | $12.50 | $62.50 |
Common mistake
Tipping twice. Some restaurants already add a service charge, especially for large groups. Check the bill before adding a tip on top.
Questions people ask
- Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
- Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, since tax isn't part of the service. Tipping on the total is also common and simply gives a slightly bigger tip.
- What's a quick way to work out 20% in my head?
- Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then double it. On a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80.
- How much should I tip?
- It depends on the country and the service. Our tipping around the world guide covers common customs.
